Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada — In a game that featured eight lead changes, 23 total runs and 35 combined hits, it was the Gary SouthShore RailCats coming out on top over the Winnipeg Goldeyes, 12-11 in 10 innings, in the series finale on Wednesday night at Shaw Park. Wednesday’s game lasted a season-long four hours, 19 minutes and increased Gary’s record to 4-3 during their season-long seven-game road trip and 14-8 during their 22 consecutive game stretch without a scheduled off day.

After both teams exchanged six runs each in the top and bottom of the ninth, Wilfredo Gimenez brought home the final run of what seemed to be a game destined to last well through the night with a two-out, RBI double off the left field wall in the top of the 10th. The RBI double was Gimenez’s second go-ahead hit of the season and one of a season-high 21 for Gary.

Winnipeg (14-11) had the leadoff man reach on a walk in the bottom of the 10th, however, Adam Quintana (1) struck out the next three to secure the win and pick up his first Independent Professional Baseball save. Keaton Steele (2-1) yielded two runs on three hits over an inning in the win while Victor Capellan (0-2) was charged with the loss after allowing a run on a hit and a walk in his third appearance in as many games.

Gary (15-10) took their first lead of the series with three consecutive two-out singles in the top third. Back-to-back singles from Alex Crosby and Andy De Jesus gave the ‘Cats runners on the corners before Mitch Glasser drove in Crosby with an RBI single up the middle.

Winnipeg quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Grant Heyman reached on a fielding error by Crosby at first before Jordan Ebert tomahawked a single into right. Andrew Sohn then drew a walk to load the bases before Dave Sappelt picked up his first American Association hit with a two-run single to center, plating both Heyman and Ebert.

The Goldeyes tacked on another run in the fifth to go up 3-1. Ebert led off the inning with a hustle-double down the right field line before stealing third. Sappelt then drew a walk before Reggie Abercrombie brought home Ebert with a two-out single down the right field line.

The RailCats trimmed the deficit in half with a run in the sixth. Colin Willis extended his on-base streak to 11 games with a one-out walk before stealing second. D.K. Carey followed with a single to left, giving Gary runners on the corners. Andy Paz then delivered an RBI single to left, bringing in Willis from third for one of his four hits.

Gary added a two-out run in the top of the seventh, tying the contest at 3-3. Crosby picked up his second of two this with a double off the right field wall before De Jesus recorded his final of three hits with a single to left. With runners on the corners, Goldeyes reliever Jack Charleston skipped a pitch to the backstop, allowing Crosby to score on the wild pitch.

Winnipeg once again countered in the bottom of the seventh with a run to take a 4-3 lead. Sappelt brought around Sohn, who reached on an infield single, on his final of three RBIs with an RBI double to right.

The RailCats responded with two runs in the eighth to take their second of four leads. Reggie Wilson deadlocked the game at 4-4 with an RBI single to center before Cole Fabio gave Gary a 5-4 lead with a two-out, opposite-field RBI single.

The Goldeyes evened the game at 5-5 with a two-out run in the bottom of the eighth. After Kevin Garcia tripled off Myles Smith to lead off the frame, Jordan Ebert punched a two-out RBI single to right, plating Garcia.

Both starters recorded quality starts against their former teams. Former RailCat Charle Rosario yielded two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three in 6.2 innings while Daniel Minor struck out a season-high nine over six innings of three-run (two earned runs) ball.

The RailCats are idle on Thursday and return home to U.S. Steel Yard from their season-long seven-game road trip on Friday, June 15th vs. the Sioux City Explorers. LHP Alex Gunn (3-1, 3.00) gets the ball for Gary in the first matchup of the year vs. Sioux City while the Explorers have yet to announce their starter for the series opener.

Friday’s series opener vs. Sioux City is Merrillville, Crown Point, DeMotte and Rensselear Community Night and a Fireworks Friday, presented by Fifth Third Bank. Friday’s game is also Sandlot Night and the first of two Scout Night Campouts. Scout Night ticket packages range from $9 to $19 and feature Q & A with the players after the game, the movie Sandlot on the Jumbotron, postgame fireworks, a campout on the field and s’mores and breakfast the next morning.
