GARY, Ind. —  Six innings of one-run ball from Alex Gunn and three hits from Andy Paz led the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Dogs in the inaugural regular-season game between the two teams on Memorial Day at U.S. Steel Yard. The win was Gary’s third straight and handed Chicago their eighth consecutive loss.

Gary (5-5) got on the board in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Alex Crosby drew a five-pitch walk to begin the inning before stealing second and third. Two batters later, Mitch Glasser brought Crosby in to score with an RBI groundout to Chicago shortstop Matt Telesco.

Chicago (1-9) tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the fourth. Treysen Vavra recorded his second of two hits with a one-out double to left-center before advancing to third on an Andy De Jesus fielding error at short. Former RailCat Craig Maddox followed with an RBI groundout to second, scoring Vavra from third for the Dogs’ first run.

The ‘Cats regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Colin Willis led off the inning with a double to right-center before Paz singled to left with one out, giving Gary runners on the corners. A Wilfredo Rodriguez passed ball allowed Willis to score the first run of the frame before Cole Fabio gave Gary a 3-1 advantage with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Paz from third.

Gary added their final run with two outs in the seventh. With Willis on third and Garrett Copeland on first, Paz sent a broken bat RBI single in to center field for the last of his three hits, plating Willis for the second time.

Maddox delivered the final run of the game with a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth. The homer was Maddox’s first of the year and the 66th of his career.

Gunn (1-1) was awarded win after allowing an unearned run over six innings. The southpaw yielded five hits and two walks and struck out three in his third start.

Chris Powell (1) and Keaton Steele (2) each recorded holds with scoreless relief appearances. Powell struck out two in the seventh while Steele retired three of the four batters he faced in the eighth. Myles Smith (1) secured the win with his first despite allowing a run in the ninth.
