KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A 3-0 lead after three innings didn’t hold for Gary as the RailCats fell to the Kansas City T-Bones, 5-3, in Thursday night’s rubber game. The RailCats offense managed just three hits on the night and have now dropped back-to-back series to open the 2018 season.

Gary (2-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first on Randy Santiesteban’s solo home run to left. The home run was Santiesteban’s first of the year and extended his personal-best on-base streak dating to last season (including playoffs) to 24 games.

The RailCats scored their final two runs of the evening with two outs in the third. With the bases loaded, Garrett Copeland pulled a two-run single through the right side of the infield, plating Cole Fabio and Alex Crosby.

Kansas City (3-3) took the lead with a four-run fourth inning. Dexter Kjerstad got KC on the board with a sacrifice fly to right before Angel Rosa made it 3-2 with a two-out RBI double to left-center on what appeared to be the final out of the inning. Rosa lifted a fly ball to shallow left-center field, however, the shortstop Santiesteban and center fielder Christoph Bono lost the ball in the lights, allowing Cal Towey to score. Johnny Davis followed with a two-run triple to the right-center, scoring Tucker Pennell and Angel Rosa.

Keither Curcio doubled the T-Bones lead to 5-3 with a solo home run off RailCats right-hander Keaton Steele to begin the bottom of the seventh. The home run Curcio’s first of the year and was the final run of the night.

Alex Gunn (0-1) was charged with the loss in his second start of the season. The southpaw allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out one over five innings.

Hunter Adkins (1-0) recorded the win in his season debut for Kansas City. The right-hander yielded three runs (two earned) on two hits and four walks while striking out three in five innings.

Cody Winiarski (3) secured the win with the save for the second consecutive night. The reigning American Association Reliever of the Year yielded a two-out double to Wilfredo Gimenez to bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth but got Reggie Wilson to fly out to the warning track in left to end the game.

The RailCats continue their six-game road on Friday in Minnesota against the St. Paul Saints at 7:05 p.m. RHP Chuck Weaver (0-0, 2.45) makes his first career American Association road start for Gary against St. Paul RHP Eddie Medina (0-0, 3.00) in the series opener at CHS Field.

The RailCats return home on Monday, May 28th for the start of a season-long 10-game homestand. Monday’s game is the inaugural regular-season game vs. the Chicago Dogs and is Ketchup Appreciation Day, a Memorial Day Matinee, All You Can Eat Night ($10 wristbands for hot dogs, popcorn and peanuts) and another MetroPCS Monday at U.S. Steel Yard.
