GARY, Ind. – Alex Crosby’s walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the ninth gave Gary a 2-1 win over Sioux Falls and extended the RailCats season-high winning streak to five games. Tuesday’s win and Kansas City’s 7-1 loss to Wichita also puts Gary just 1.5 games behind the T-Bones for first in the Wild Card.                                                                                             

Cole Fabio drew a four-pitch walk to begin the bottom of the ninth before Chase Harris moved him up to second with a sacrifice bunt up the first base line. Crosby followed Harris with a walk-off single through the right side of the infield on the first pitch he saw from Andrew Woeck, giving Gary (45-35) their sixth walk-off victory of the year.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Colin Willis hit a sacrifice fly to score Cam Newell, giving the RailCats a 1-0 lead. Newell led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error from second baseman Tyler Wolfe. Kris Goodman then followed with an infield single of his own, advancing Newell to third. The first out of the inning was recorded when Goodman was thrown out at second on a stolen base attempt before Willis finished his at bat.

Sioux Falls (37-43) was able to salvage a run in the top of the seventh. Wolfe led off the inning with a double to right field and advanced to third on Patrick Fiala’s single to right. After Trey Vavra (popout) and Ty Morrison (strikeout) were retired, Wolfe and Fiala executed the double-steal, tying the game at 1-1.

Jorge De Leon, who turned 30 on Tuesday, earned the win with a scoreless top of the ninth. De Leon (7-1) allowed a two-out single and struck out the other three batters he faced. Woeck (4-1) allowed a hit and a walk over 1/3 of an inning in his first loss of the season.

Both starters pitched effectively and consequently recorded no decisions in the ballgame. Alex Gunn allowed an earned run on six hits, walked one, and struck out four in 6.1 innings of work while Troy Marks allowed an earned run on eight hits, walked none, and struck out three for the Canaries.

Gary continues their three-game series vs. Sioux Falls on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. Daniel Minor (0-0, 4.56) opposes Canaries right-hander Miles Nordgren (5-5, 4.53) in the middle game of the series.
