GARY, Ind. –   The Gary SouthShore RailCats finished off the seven-game homestand on a high note with a 9-4 victory over the Saint Paul Saints in front of a season-high 5,798 fans at the U.S. Steel Yard on Wednesday night. Every starter for Gary recorded at least one hit while seven of the nine reached base twice.

After scoring four of their six runs with two outs on Tuesday night, St. Paul scored the first two runs of the game on Anthony Gallas’ two-out, two-run home run to left-center in the top of the first. The home run for Gallas was his league-tying 18th of the season.

Gary (41-35) quickly evened the game at 2-2 with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Reggie Wilson drew a one-out walk before Cameron Newell brought him around to score on an RBI double to right-center. Two batters later, Frank Martinez tied the game with a two-out RBI single down the right field line.

The RailCats took a 5-2 lead with three runs in the third. Martinez put Gary in front for the first time on the night with an RBI single before Kris Goodman increased the lead to three with a two-run single up the middle.

Gary tacked on another run in the fourth, extending their lead to 6-2. Alex Crosby pulled a double down the right field line to start the frame before Wilson brought him in with an RBI single to center.

Nate Hanson cut the Gary lead to three with a two-out solo home run to left in the top of the sixth. The home run was Hanson’s 11th of the season and extended his hitting streak to 20 straight games.

In the bottom half of the sixth, the RailCats got the offense going with two outs. Randy Santiesteban began the spurt with a single. Martinez followed with a walk before Wilfredo Giminez drove in both Santiesteban and Gimenez with an RBI double to make the score 8-3.

Gary scored their final run in the eighth to go in front of St. Paul, 9-3. Back-to-back singles from Newell and Santiesteban gave the RailCats runners on the corners before Martinez bounced into a double play, bringing in Newell.

St. Paul (41-34) tried to spark a rally in the top of the ninth. Mitch Delfino reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to third on Tanner Lubach’s double. Delfino scored when Breland Almadova hit a groundout to third for the second out of the inning.

Alex Gunn (7-4) pitched his third consecutive quality start in the victory. Gunn pitched six innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits, no walks and struck out four. St. Paul’s Matt Schuld (0-2) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on four hits, four walks and five strikeouts.

Gary is idle on Thursday before heading north up to N.D. for the start of a three-game series vs. Fargo-Moorhead at 7:02 p.m. Neither team has announced their starter for the series opener.

Gary returns home to U.S. Steel Yard on Tuesday, August 15th for a three-game series vs. the Sioux Falls Canaries. Tuesday’s game is another CHN and Taco Tuesday.
