RailCats sign RHP Myers to first professional contract

GARY, Ind. The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Samuel Myers to his first professional contract. Myers played collegiately at Division-I Cal State-Northridge for his junior and senior seasons. He transferred to CSUN from Central Arizona College, where he contributed to a conference championship in 2014.

During his senior season, Myers where he was 9-6 with a 3.49 career ERA during his junior and senior seasons.  During his senior season, Myers made 14 starts and 15 total appearances as he logged 90.1 innings of work and striking out 85 batters. His opponents’ batting average in 2017 was a mere .222. On May 21, Myers struck out seven batters in 6.2 innings to get the win against the 13th-ranked team in the nation, Cal State-Fullerton.

Myers replaces left-handed pitcher Carlos Diaz on the roster as Diaz’s contract was sold to the Miami Marlins organization on Monday. Diaz will report to the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Marlins.

Gary begins a three-game series vs. St. Paul on Monday night at 7:10 p.m. Aryton Costa (0-0, 6.00) opposes Saints’ right-hander Jason Hoppe (0-0, 6.32) in the series opener.
