FARGO, N.D. — A first inning lead for the second straight night wasn’t enough for Gary in the middle game of the series as the RailCats fell to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, 4-3. Saturday night’s loss also snapped the RailCats season-high-tying four-game winning streak.

For the second straight game, Colin Willis gave Gary a 1-0 lead with a two-out solo home run into the right field parking lot in the top of the first. The homer was Willis’ fourth of the year and extended his season-high hitting streak to 12.

Fargo-Moorhead (18-18) quickly tied up the game with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back singles by Devan Ahart and Mitch Delfino gave the RedHawks runners on the corners before Josh Mazzola brought home Ahart with a sacrifice fly to center.

The RedHawks gained their first lead of the series with a pair of runs in the second. An RBI fielder’s choice from Ahart made it 2-1 before a throwing error from Westin Wuethrich on a pickoff attempt sailed over Randy Santiesteban, allowing Charlie Valerio to score.

Gary (19-17) cut the Fargo-Moorhead lead to one with a two-out run in the third. Chase Harris and Reggie Wilson drew back-to-back walks before Santiesteban delivered an RBI double to the right-center wall, scoring Harris from second.

The RailCats tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth courtesy of three straight singles to open the inning. Anthony Cheky Jr. reached on an infield single up the third base line, however, Mazzola’s off-balanced throw went wide of Delfino, allowing Cheky Jr. to advance to second to begin the frame. Willis then reached on an infield single to short, moving Cheky Jr to third. Frank Martinez followed Willis with a pinch-hit, RBI single down the left field line, bringing home Cheky Jr.

Fargo-Moorhead went in front for good with a two-out run in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on first and second, Bryan Vaughan delivered an RBI single to center, scoring Ryan Pineda from second for the game-winning run.

Alex Weingarten (1-1) was charged with the loss in his second pro appearance. The 23-year-old allowed one run on one hit and a walk and struck out a batter in 1.2 innings.

Jack Fowler and Jack Mathys each tossed scoreless innings of relief for Gary. Mathys inherited the bases loaded with no outs in the fourth and got out of the jam without allowing a run. In two innings, Mathys allowed no runs on a hit and struck out one while Fowler struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Reggie Tate (2-1) allowed one run on three hits over an inning of relief in the win while Casey Weathers (7) retired all three batters he faced for the save in the top of the ninth. Jose Almarante retired 10 straight at one point and allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six in seven innings.

Gary concludes their three-game series against Fargo-Moorhead on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Southpaw Braulio Torres-Perez (3-0, 4.25) counters against RedHawks right-hander Tyler Herron (1-0, 1.23) in the rubber game of the series.
