Power of Play: One World Futbol

The Orlando City Soccer foundation has partnered up with One World Futbol Project. One World Futbol is an organization that’s developed a material to create indestructible soccer balls. The donated soccer ball is given to an area in need such as refugee camps, war zones, disaster areas and inner cities.

Without a ball, there is no game. Without a ball, you cannot experience the passion, excitement and beauty of soccer. Play helps us learn and can help children recover from trauma, cope with poverty, war and natural disaster. For millions around the world, their ‘ball’ is little more than a rock, an empty bottle, a deflated old one or even just a homemade rag.

One World Futbol inventor Tim Jahnigen was inspired to start the project after watching news footage of kids in Darfur playing a soccer game using a ball of trash tied up with twine. At that moment, Tim set out to design a ball that played like a “real futbol,” but would never wear out, never go flat, never need a pump.
Tim’s idea remained in the concept stage until a chance conversation with world‐renowned entertainer Sting. Once Tim shared his vision of a virtually-indestructible ball, Sting immediately provided the support needed to do the research and development. In recognition of Sting’s crucial, early involvement, the name of the ball and of the project are based on the song “One World (Not Three),” written by the singer/songwriter. Sting continues to be an advocate for and supporter of the One World Futbol Project.

The foundation will be raising funds for indestructible soccer balls developed by One World Futbol throughout 2013. The balls will be distributed both locally and worldwide.

Exercise and Healthy Eating: ROCK

The Orlando City Soccer Foundation has partnered up with local organization ROCK- Reduce Obesity in Central Florida Kids. The central concept of ROCK and our foundation is to promote healthy eating and physical activity in schools, youth groups and communities by providing free soccer clinics and collaborating on healthy eating initiatives.

Alarmingly, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years; Florida is ranked 35th in the United States in overall prevalence. It carries serious but preventable health risks for children.

Studies have shown that kids who get regular physical activity are more than alert and less prone to weight problems and various health concerns. Regular play also has been shown to help kids sleep better at night, which in turn can help children maintain healthy weight.

Working with local organizations such as ROCK, we look to aid in the education of children and families about healthy eating and exercise.

Soccer Scholarships: Sponsor a Youth Player

The Orlando City Soccer Foundation has made it a priority to attempt to create an environment where any youth interested in participating in soccer with the Orlando City Soccer Club will have that opportunity.  Research has shown that children who participate in team sports have lower dropout rates, higher marks in the classroom, lower incidence of substance abuse and higher self-esteem.

There are 76,000 children playing youth soccer throughout Central Florida but for some, playing on an organized team can be too costly. We at Orlando City believe playing soccer should be available to all and economic circumstances should not be a barrier.

We at Orlando City Soccer Club greatly appreciate these contributions to sponsoring a youth soccer player. Upon donating for these sponsorships your business or name will be rewarded through:

  • Recognition on both the Professional team and Youth soccer websites as well as the Youth Facebook Page
  • You will receive two VIP tickets to the President’s Club for one regular season home game
  • Opportunity to advertise four times per year on the Youth Newsletter

Sponsorship is $1,200.
